Renovation is usually when a household replaces its big appliances — the fridge, the washing machine, the aircon. It is also exactly when the government's Climate Vouchers are most useful, because they subsidise energy- and water-efficient appliances. Many households never claim them, which is leaving free money on the table.
What you can claim
Under the Climate Friendly Households Programme — a joint initiative of the National Environment Agency (NEA) and PUB — eligible households can claim $400 in Climate Vouchers. This comprises an initial $300, with a further $100 added from 15 April 2025. The vouchers can be redeemed in denominations of $2, $5, $10 and $50, and the deadline to use them is 31 December 2027.
Who is eligible
To claim, you must be a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident registered and residing at an HDB flat, or a Singapore Citizen registered and residing at a private residential property (the additional $100 top-up applies to HDB households). Only one member of each eligible household may claim, for their registered address.
What the vouchers can be spent on
The vouchers go towards products that save energy or water, including:
- appliances carrying NEA's Energy Label or PUB's Water Efficiency Label;
- LED lights;
- direct current (DC) fans;
- induction stoves.
They are redeemed at participating retailers. Because the voucher rewards efficiency, it nudges you toward the appliances that are also cheaper to run — which, for the fridge and aircon that run constantly in Singapore's climate, is where the real long-term saving sits anyway.
How to read the Energy Label
NEA's Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme rates regulated appliances from one to five ticks — more ticks means more efficient. The label covers refrigerators, air-conditioners, clothes dryers, televisions and some lamps. Because aircon and the fridge are the appliances that run most, the difference between a three-tick and a five-tick unit shows up on every electricity bill for the next decade. Spending the Climate Vouchers on those two specifically is usually the best use of them.
Don't forget to claim
The vouchers are not automatic — a household member has to claim them for the registered address, through the Climate Friendly Households Programme channel, and then present them at a participating retailer. If you are renovating and replacing appliances anyway, build the claim into the plan so it is not forgotten in the rush. $400 is $400.
