Plan my renovation GoDesign draws on renovation heritage beginning in 1982, and a practical understanding of what happens after the drawings are approved.
In 1982, Yap Kian Hock Contractor began taking on renovation work in Singapore. No showroom, no brochure — a man, his tools, and a reputation built one job at a time.
His son grew up around that work. Around sites and sawdust, and around a standard that was never written down anywhere but was never negotiable either: you finish properly, even when nobody is watching.
In 2022, Patrick Yap founded GoDesign, carrying his late father's trade forward under a new name. Four decades separate the two businesses. What carried across was not a logo — it was a way of working.
Go the extra mile.
The line under our name — and the thing his father did
It is the extra trip back to correct something small. The detail nobody would have noticed. The call answered after hours. It is an easy thing to print on a wall, and a harder one to do on a Friday evening when the job is almost finished.
That is the standard we are trying to keep — and the reason the work starts with understanding how a household actually lives, rather than fitting every home to the same design.
Wisdom from four decades in the trade. Understanding, because every household lives differently and the brief matters more than the trend. Knowledge, because materials and methods keep changing, and the right decision today is not the one that was right ten years ago.
Around those sit the values the company was founded on — integrity, excellence, service, creativity, stewardship and collaboration.
Home, household, priorities, timeline and initial budget.
Translate needs into a practical proposal and selections.
Plan the work sequence and keep decisions visible.
Review finishing details and close outstanding items.
Designers, project coordinators and carpentry — the same people from first conversation through to handover.

After more than 16 years in Singapore's renovation industry, I realised something: homeowners are not short of renovation choices. What they are short of is clear, honest information.
Renovation is confusing. Quotations to compare, materials to understand, workmanship standards to judge, timelines to manage — and many decisions being made for the first time. By the time some people understand what they should have asked, they have already signed a contract.
My family has been in this trade since 1982, so I have watched how it — and what homeowners expect of it — has changed. The Reno Boss is where I put that experience to use: costs and quotations, workmanship, materials, contractors, the common red flags, and the realities of running a renovation business, including the projects that did not go perfectly.
My goal is simple: to help Singapore homeowners make better renovation decisions — even if they never engage me or GoDesign.
It is not a page about selling renovation. It is about sharing real experience, one lesson at a time.

GoDesign is proud to be part of Interior Alliance, a collective of established interior design firms in Singapore working together to raise industry standards, promote better practices, and strengthen trust within the renovation industry.
Through collaboration, shared knowledge, and a common commitment to professionalism, Interior Alliance aims to create a better renovation experience for homeowners while supporting a stronger and more responsible interior design industry.

Anyone can say they are careful. These are the things that can be looked up — with the reference numbers, so you can.

A joint accreditation covering clear contracts, deposit protection and a defined dispute process. It is the credential to look for when comparing renovation firms.

An audited workplace safety and health management system. It matters most to the people on site — and to you, because site accidents become your delays.
Not the reason to choose a renovation firm — but a good day for a company that started as one man with his tools.
